Selling a Dutch car abroad through our export network
Moving to Spain and leaving the car behind? Or does it have high mileage, a diesel engine or damage? You can offer it for export through us. Requesting an offer costs nothing and commits you to nothing; you decide whether to sell.
- Free offer, no obligation
- Offers from car companies abroad
- Export transfer at our desk
Not every car makes the move to Spain, and not every car finds a buyer easily in the Netherlands. In both cases we can act as intermediary: you send us the details and photos of your car, we pass them on to our network of car companies abroad, and they can make an offer. We then handle the paperwork at our RDW-recognised desk in Hengelo. It works for cars as well as company vans.
Cars that export buyers are looking for
Our export partners are mainly looking for:
- cars with more than 200,000 km on the clock;
- diesel cars;
- former lease cars;
- company vans;
- damaged cars.
The car should be from 2008 or later. Not sure whether yours qualifies? Send the details anyway: requesting an offer costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
Selling before the move, or taking the car to Spain?
If you are moving to Spain, you can take your own car with you. That does mean a process over there: an ITV inspection with a CoC or ficha reducida, registration at Tráfico and, depending on CO2 emissions, the registration tax IEDMT. A relocation exemption may apply, but then you may not sell the car within 12 months of registration. How that works is explained on moving to Spain with a car, and all the steps are on registering a car in Spain.
If you would rather sell before the move, you can offer the car here. An offer is not binding, so you can weigh it against the expected costs in Spain. Remember the journey too: export papers, white plates and export insurance cost from €150 in the complete package. And if the car is already in Spain on Dutch plates and you decide to keep it, we can still deregister it remotely, through a separate procedure by post.
What to send so foreign car buyers can make an offer
The more complete the details, the better a company can assess your car. Send us:
- the registration number, make and model;
- the year and mileage;
- the fuel type;
- the condition of the car and any damage;
- clear photos of the outside and inside, and of any damage.
The form has no upload field, so send photos using the WhatsApp button next to the form, or by email. Your registration number and name are filled in automatically if you have entered them in the form first.
Brokerage, not buying: who makes the offer for your car
We do not buy your car ourselves. We pass the details to companies in our network abroad, and one of them may make an offer. We pass it on to you and you decide whether to sell. Whether an offer will come cannot be known in advance, and we do not give valuations: the price is set by the company's offer alone. For you as the seller it is free: the buyer pays for the export papers and, if needed, the export insurance and white plates.
The cars our export partners are looking for
- Mileage above 200,000 km
- Diesel cars
- Ex-lease cars
- Company vans
- Damaged cars
- Built in 2008 or later
Free and without obligation: requesting an offer costs you nothing
How it works
- You send us the details and photos of your car, via the form or WhatsApp.
- We pass your car's details on to our network of car companies abroad. They may make an offer.
- If an offer comes in, we forward it to you. You decide whether to sell.
- Agreed? The export transfer can take place at our desk in Hengelo: you receive the vrijwaringsbewijs (proof of deregistration), the buyer receives the export documents and, if needed, export insurance and two white plates.
We act as an intermediary; the offer comes from a car company abroad. There is no guarantee of an offer.
Exporting the sold car at our desk in Hengelo
If you accept an offer, the export transfer takes place at our desk in Hengelo. You receive the indemnification certificate, the buyer receives the export documents. If the buyer drives the car away, they also receive export insurance and two white export plates. After the export, your insurance obligation, APK obligation and Dutch road tax stop, the RDW says. With complete papers the visit usually takes about 15 minutes.
For the transfer you need the registration card with its registration code, the yellow number plates and valid identification of the person the export is registered to. More about these papers is on Dutch car export documents.
Already found a buyer in Spain? They export the car
If you already have a buyer abroad, such as a friend in Spain, you do not need us as intermediary. Do note how the transfer works: the car is not registered to the foreign buyer in the Dutch register. The RDW advises that the buyer exports the vehicle in their own name; they receive the export certificate and you receive the indemnification certificate. If the buyer cannot come, the RDW allows a contact person in the Netherlands to arrange the export, at our desk or remotely. We are happy to explain, free of charge, which papers your buyer will need for registration in Spain.

Before you sell for export: common questions answered
Is there a charge for asking for an export offer?
No. Requesting an offer is free and commits you to nothing. If you sell, the buyer pays for the export papers and, if the car is driven away, for the export insurance and white plates as well.
Who ends up buying my car if I accept?
A car company abroad, not us. We act as intermediary: we pass your car's details to our network of car companies, and the offer comes from one of them. We then handle the export papers at our desk.
Is an offer certain for any car I send in?
No, an offer cannot be promised in advance. It depends on the companies in our network and on your car. If an offer arrives, we pass it on and you decide.
Which obligations end for me once the car is exported?
You receive the indemnification certificate (vrijwaringsbewijs), proof that the registration in your name has ended. According to the RDW, your insurance obligation, APK obligation and Dutch road tax stop after the export.
Moving to Spain: is it better to sell my car or take it?
That depends on your situation. Taking it means an ITV inspection, registration at Tráfico and, depending on its CO2 emissions, registration tax in Spain, unless you qualify for the relocation exemption. An offer costs nothing, so you can compare it with those costs before deciding.
